Octagon (Scotland) Ltd (Octagon) creates innovative product systems for the building industry that meet demanding economic, social and environmental criteria. Octagon's industrial design skills are supported by internationally practicing architects and engineers and by experts in manufacturing and marketing.

In cooperation with industrial partners, research agencies, consultants, co-financing agencies and building owners such as housing authorities, Octagon is currently undertaking a Feasibility Study of an innovative modular construction system that may be manufactured from sustainable sources of second-grade timber or reclaimed wood to provide a technologically advanced yet inexpensive construction medium. The system is designed to comply with the requirements of the proper authorities (eg, local authorities) and with the recommendations of organisations such as the Forestry Stewardship Council.

Octagon proposes to arrange for worldwide access to the revolutionary construction system through a system of licenses linked to territories. The system foresees that building material manufactures will manufacture the new product range from low cost base materials that will be available in semimanufactured form within their region. The product range is designed to be useful at all levels of the building industry: from DIY homebuilders to professional builders and off-site manufacturers and prefabricators.

A priority date for the construction system has been established through national and international patent applications. Also, an application has been filed to register a trade name and logo. In the near future, Octagon will start on the formulation of the Development Phase of the product system, which will include the construction of demonstration homes, school classrooms and other typical buildings. Commercial manufacture and sales are provisionally scheduled to start in 2005.
